History and achievements
The German football club Eintracht Braunschweig has a long and colourful history going back to the year 1895.
For almost a century since their foundation, the club competed in Germany’s top division omitting only three seasons. The team met with early success claiming their first silverware, the Northern German championship title, in 1908. The Lions, as they are often nicknamed, kept their consistence by repeating the feat in 1913 and finishing as Northern German championship runners-up four times after that.
The 1960s saw a fruitful period for Eintracht Braunschweig. The club was one of the founding members of the Bundesliga in 1963 and tasted its honour in 1967. It’s a tidbit that the team set up an unbeaten record of being the only team not seeing a single red card during 322 games since 1963 till 1973. Moreover, Braunschweig is the first Bundesliga club to introduce a sponsor logo on their jerseys.
In the mid 1980s, the team’s success changed to a downturn. In the 1985/86 season, the Lions found themselves in the second tier and slumped to a new low in 1988. Since that time, Braunschweig was constantly rotating between the third and second divisions never winning its ticket back to the top flight. However, under manager Torsten Lieberknecht who took charge over team in 2008, the club considerably improved their results and got promotion to 1.Bundesliga after the 2012/13 season. However, they did not last in the top flight and got back to 2.Bundesliga after one season.
The team play their home matches at Eintracht-Stadion in Braunschweig that can hold up to 25,540 spectators.
