Erzgebirge Aue is a German club founded in 1946 in Aue. The club began to carve out the name for itself from the lower German leagues until climbing up to the top-flight DDR-Oberliga in 1951. In 1954, the German government insisted on Karl-Marx-Stadt, present Chemnitz, have its own quality team and Erzgebirge Aue, renamed SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt, was to represent the city. The mid-1950s saw a fruitful period for the club. As Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt, they claimed their first silverware in the shape of the German Cup in 1955 and collected four German Championship victories thus establishing themselves as the most powerful side in East Germany.
With the formation of the Bundesliga in 1963, the club recovered its identity. After the German reunification it got its current name Erzgebirge Aue in 1993, with ‘Erzgebirge’ meaning Ore Mountains in English, the area where the club is located. In the 2000s, the team bounced up and down between third-division Regionalliga Nord and the 2. Bundesliga. Since 2011 they’ve got a toehold in the second tier and compete there today.
Erzgebirge Aueplay their home matches at Erzgebirgsstadion which can hold 12,542 spectators.
