Everton de Viña del Mar, known as simply Everton, is a football club from the town of Viña del Mar. It was founded by the group of Anglo-Chilean youngsters and got its name after Everton from Liverpool who came to visit South America not long before the team’s formation in 1909.
Everton claimed their first Chilean Primera División title in 1950 and repeated the feat in 1952. After that success the team went into the shade and bounced up and down between the first and second tiers until the 1970s. They made their third league honors in 1976 and debuted in the Copa Libertadores next year. In 2008, Everton won the Apertura tournament of the top league.
It’s a tidbit that Everton played a friendly match with their English namesakes within the Brotherhood Trophy tournament in August 2010. The encounter ended in a 2-0 victory of Everton from Liverpool.
Everton de Viña del Mar are often nicknamed the Ruleteros, or the roulette players in English, as the club is situated in a gambling resort. They play their home matches at Estadio Sausalito which can host up to 22,000 people.
