The modern Flamengo football club was born in 1885, however, it had to wait for some time to get its first taste of top-level football. The club`s maiden game took place only in 1912.
In 1981 Flamengo claimed the Copa Libertadores triumph with Zico at the helm. The year of 1999 saw the team lift the Copa Mercosur. But the club lost its competitive force and no titles were to follow in the next few years. In 2009 Flamengo got back on track as Rubro-Negros beat Vasco da Gama in the Copa do Brasil final, qualifying for the 2007 Copa Libertadores. In 2009 Flamengo was crowned Brazilian champions. The club`s total comprises 6 Brasileirão and 32 Campeonato Carioca titles.
Engenhão is the club`s stadium but most of the games are played at the Estádio do Maracanã. Flamengo`s home kit includes a red and black hooped shirt with white shorts and redcurrant striped socks.
In 2011 the club secured the services of Ronaldinho who immediately took the captain`s armband and helped his team win the state league. In 2012 he left for Atlético Mineiro.
