Free State Stars

History and achievements

Free State Stars is a football club in South Africa, located in Bethlehem, the province of Free State. It was founded in 1977 in a village QwaQwa and was named Makwane Computer Stars. In 1986, the club got promotion to the First Division of the National Premier Soccer League. The club got sponsorship from Fairway Supermarket and was relocated to Phuthadithjaba and was renamed into Fairways Stars, later it got the name of Qwa Qwa Stars. As time had gone the club became popular in Free State province and since then they are called Free State Stars.

Among the club’s achievements are the 1994 Coca-Cola Cup, the 2004/05 and 2006/07 Mvela Golden League titles, the 2006 Baymed Cup.

Such team players as Steve Komphela, Kennedy Mweene, Mxolisi Gumede and John Tlale have been called up to the national squad. And Steve Komphela, who is a retired player, currently is the team’s manager.

Free State Stars play their home matches at Goble Park, which they share with Carara Kicks. The stadium has a capacity of 20,000.
