Genk is a football team from the city of Genk. The club appeared in 1923 under the name FC Winterslag. It played in the first league for the first time in 1975. The highest achievement of the side was the 5th place in 1981. In 1988 the club united with Waterschei Thor to form K.R.C. Genk. The new side appeared in the Jupiler league in 1997. In the season 1997/1998 Genk finished as a runner-up and claimed the Belgian Cup. The following season Genk tasted the honors of the league and the season 1999/2000 saw Genk winning the Belgian Cup again.
After winning one more championship 2002 the club unexpectedly embarked on a downward spiral for several seasons, the decline that changed with a rise in 2009 with the trophy of the Belgian Cup. In the season 2010/2011 the club took the Belgian Pro League title again. The last major achievement is Belgian Supercup claimed in 2011.

Genk is well-known for its youth academy which discovered many gifted players that play in the first team.
