Gent is a Belgian football club. The team was founded in 1864 as a part of the “Société Gymnastique la Gantoise” that also included such sports as cricket, fencing, cycling, hockey, tennis and swimming. In the mid-1950s the club was one of the strongest sides in the championship, finishing third in the season 1953/1954 and second in the season 1954/1955. The first major title in the shape of the Belgian Cup was clinched in 1964. In 1971 the side was renamed to "Koninklijke Atletiek Associatie Gent".
In the 1970s Gent was relegated to the third division, though it bounced back to the top league in the early 1980s and even clinched the Belgian Cup in 1984.
During the season 2009/2010 Gent was one of the main title contenders in the Jupiler league, though they only managed to finish as a runner-up, thus repeating the result they achieved more than half a century ago. The last major trophy of the team is the 2009/2010 Belgian Cup.
Jules Ottenstadion is the home stadium of the club. The arena was opened in 1920 and can hold up to 12,919 fans.
The nickname of the team is De Buffalos (The Buffalos).
