Gimnàstic is a professional football club that was founded in 1886. It is one of the oldest football teams in the country. Gimnàstic sport club also includes tennis, athletics, gymnastics and table tennis departments.
Gimnastic was originally organized for promoting gymnastics among middle class population of Tarragona. The football team appeared in 1914 and it was only in 1927 that they started taking part in the Catalan championship, while before that mostly playing in friendly fixtures.
The team made its debut in the second division in 1944 and two seasons later finished runner-up in the league, receiving promotion to the top flight. In 1947 Gimnastic reached the semifinal of the Copa del Generalísimo, yet lost to Espanyol.
Overall throughout its history the team spent in the top tier only 4 seasons and 18 seasons in the second league.
