FC Gomel is a football club in Belarus, named after the city it is located in. It was formed in 1959 and initially it was Lokomotiv Gomel. Since its foundation and till 1968 the team competed at the second level of Soviet football. At that period they were the league winners in 1962, were last in the table in 1959 and 1963, but there wasn’t a system of promotion and relegation.
Throughout its history, the team’s name was changed several times: Lokomotiv Gomel, Spartak Gomel, Gomselmash Gomel, Mashinostroitel Gomel, Gomselmash Gomel and finally in 1995 the team was named Gomel.
Between 1969 and 1989 the team played at the third level and then had two seasons at the fourth level.
Gomel began to compete in Belarusian Premier League since the dissolution of USSR. Between 1995 and 1997, as well as in 2010 Gomel played at the second level. In 2003 they won their first Belarusian Premier League title, in 2007 the team won silver medals and 1999 and 2011 they were third. Their Domestic Cup titles came in 2002 and 2011.
The capacity of their home venue, Central Stadium, is 14,307.
