History and achievements
Grêmio is a Brazilian football club located in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. The club competes in the Campeonato Gaúcho and the Brasileirão. The titles that Grêmio has managed to secure include two Copa Libertadores, one Intercontinental Cup, four Brazilian Cups and two national championships. Home matches are played at the Estádio Olímpico which has seating for 45 000 fans.
Grêmio’s story started on September 7, 1903. In 1981 the team delivered its first silverware, wining the Campeonato Brasileiro. During the 1980s the Immortal were the dominant force in the game, as the club racked up the trophies one by one.
In 1991 Grêmio went down to the Série B but came back a year later. The club`s president Fábio André Koff bolstered his squad by shrewd signings of Jardel, Dinho, Paulo Nunes, Rivarola and many others. And Grêmio found some form as the side lifted the 1996 Brasileirão and two Brazilian Cups in 1997 and 2001. It came as a surprise when Grêmio suffered relegation in 2004. A season later the team ensured promotion to the Série A after a dramatic victory against Náutico. In 2006 Grêmio won the state league, preventing Inter from lifting a fifth successive title. The club`s third-place finish in the Brasileirão secured a qualification for the Copa Libertadores.
In 2007 the Immortal progressed to the Copa Libertadores final but were overcome by Argentinean side Boca Juniors.
