History and achievements
Guangzhou Evergrande Football Club is a Chinese football team located in Guangzhou, Guangdong. The club`s total comprises five league titles. The club’s home matches are played at Tianhe Stadium.
The club was established in June 1954 and was originally known as Guangzhou Football Team. In January 1993 Guangzhou gained sponsorship from Apollo Group and finally turned professional. After the establishment of the Chinese Super League the team predominantly competed in the second division. In 2007 Guangzhou won promotion to the top tier as champions of the Chinese Jia League.
On February 21, 2010 the club was relegated to the Chinese Jia League as the team was accused of match-fixing. In 2006 Guangzhou paid CNY 200,000 to its opponent in order to win the match.
On February 28, 2010 the club was sold to Evergrande Real Estate Group for a ¥100 million fee. The president of the club intended to splash cash in the transfer market. Guangzhou completed the signing of the former Shanghai Shenhua striker Gao Lin. Then the club appointed Lee Jang-Soo as their new manager. In the summer of 2010 Southern China Tigers signed Muriqui from Atlético Mineiro. The size of the transfer fee the club had paid to secure the player’s services was $3.5m.
In October 2010 Guangzhou secured a 3-1 victory over Hunan Billows and clinched the second division title. The club was promoted to the Chinese Super League and made a good fist of it in their first season. During the 2011 season the team was almost invincible. Ultimately, Guangzhou was crowned league champions with four games to spare. In the summer of 2012 the club made two big signings. The former Borussia Dortmund striker Lucas Barrios committed his future to the club. Marcello Lippi took over as a new manager. He immediately guided his side to the second consecutive league title. The club also participated in the AFC Champions League but was knocked out by Al Ittihad in the quarterfinals.
