Győr

Győri ETO FC is a Hungarian football club located in the city of Győr. The side plays in the OTP Bank Liga.

Győr started life in 1904. In 1937 the club got promotion to the top division, though it turned out to be a false dawn as the team slipped into the second tier the following season. From the 1940s to 1960s the team experienced several promotions and relegations. In 1960 Győr joined the elite and has been a consistent performer since then. The club’s first honours soon followed when the players secured the league title in 1963. In the 1964/65 campaign Győr beat Chemie Leipzig, Lokomotiv Sofia and Door Wilskracht Sterk en route to the European Cup semi-final. However, the club was stunned by Portuguese outfit Benfica. Győr’s adventure in the European Cup came to an end. The side also managed to lift three Hungarian Cup trophies in the 1960s. The 1980s were just as eventful. The team clinched two back-to-back league titles in 1982 and 1983 and finished runners-up in the 1984/1985 season. In the nineties Győri ETO FC languished in the middle of the table.

In the 2000s Győr became recognized as a force claiming three third spots in the OTP Bank Liga. The year of 2010 also saw the club qualify for the Europa League group stage but couldn’t reach the knockout phase.

ETO Park is Győr’s home ground which holds 16,000 spectators.
