FC Hannover 96 appeared on April 12, 1896. It was a sport club where school pupils practiced athletics and rugby that favored creation of the football division. In 1913 the sport club Hannover 96 united major sport teams of the city and became a large organization headed by future German president Paul von Hindenburg.
The club achieved first success in 1930s. It happened mainly due to Fritz Deike, Ludwig Pohler, and Edmund Malecki. It was the time when this modest team won their first gold medals.
Throughout its history Hannover 96 won the German championship twice, in 1934 and 1954. In 1992 the team celebrated the win in the German cup.
Jupp Heynckes, Gheorghe Popescu, Fredie Bobic, Gerald Asamoah, Robert Enke, Mike Hanke, Mikael Forssell, Emanuel Pogatetz, Jiri Stajner are among outstanding players of the club.
Hannover 96 plays its home matches at AWD Arena, seating around 45,000 supporters. In 2006 the stadium hosted the World Cup matches. Nowadays the team’s coach is Mirko Slomka and Martin Kind is the president. The club finished 7th in the 2011/2012 season.
