Heerenveen is a football club from Netherlands that appeared in 1920 under the name of Spartaan, but two years later the title Heerenveen was accepted.
Although during the 1930s and 1940s Heerenveen dominated in the northern Dutch leagues and claimed a number of local trophies, the first promotion to the Eerste Divisie took place only in 1970. Four years later the team went into financial turmoil that hampered its development for several years.
The 1990s were the time when Heerenveen finally climbed to the Erstedivisie, securing a strong mid-position place there. The highest achievement of the side on the domestic arena is the second place of the Erstedivisie in the season 1999/2000.
The only silverware the team won is 2009 KNVB Cup, when they defeated in the final Twente 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out.
Most notable players of the team are Afonso Alves, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Miralem Sulejmani, Michael Bradley, Danijel Pranjic, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Marcus AllbäckJon, Dahl Tomasson, Daniel Jensen.
The home games are held at the Abe Lenstra Stadion that was introduced in 1994 and sits 26,000 supporters.
