History and achievements
Hertha BSC is a German Berlin-based club that currently competes in the Bundesliga.
The club was founded in 1892 and has a long and colourful history. It began to carve out the name for itself in the first Berlin championship Oberliga Berlin-Brandenburg. It took the team for about 40 years to claim their first major titles as the German Champions in 1930 and 1931.
During the Nazi period from 1933 till 1945, Hertha BSC competed in the top-flight Gauliga Berlin-Brandenburg winning three divisional titles in 1935, 1937 and 1944. In the postwar period the club won three Oberliga Berlin titles.
Having won the national league in the 1962/63 campaign, Berlin’s reigning champion Hertha BSC entered a newly formed Bundesliga in its inaugural 1963/64 season. However, they relegated after two seasons in the top flight. The 1970s were a fruitful period for the team as they got a toehold in the competition and made their ever best second-place Bundesliga finish in the 1974/75 season.
In the 1998/99 season, the third-place finish in the Bundesliga earned Hertha a ticket to the German League Cup. The club enjoyed a meteoric rise winning two consecutive cups in 2001 and 2002. However, their successful Bundesliga stint in the 2000s was intercepted when Hertha finished bottom in the 2009/10 season and fell out of the top tier. Though the team fought their way back becoming the 2.Bundesliga champions next season, they were not strong enough in the 2011/12 campaign and slithered to the second league again. The following year the capital team got back to the top flight.
Since the Bundesliga inception in 1963, the team play their home games at the 74,000 seater Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
