Hibernian

History and achievements

Hibernian is a football team from the northern part of Edinburgh. The side was organized in 1875 by Irish immigrants and the Irish origins of the club are still reflected in its badge and colors.

The side won its first trophy in 1887 claiming the Scottish Cup. The Hibs received a promotion to the First Division in 1895 and by this time the players of the team were no longer picked only from the Catholic Young Men's Society.

The early 1900s saw the team clinching the Scottish Cup and the first league title. But the most glorious period in the team’s life started after the Second World War, when Hibernian nicked the national title in 1948, 1951 and 1952 and also became the first British club that competed in the European tournament. The 1970s brought the club the League Cup and silver medals of the national championship.

In the 1990s the Hibs faced financial problems and narrowly escaped bankruptcy.

The popular nicknames of the club are the Hibs and the Cabbage.The home stadium is Easter Road and it has a capacity of 20,421.
