History and achievements
Lazio football club was founded at the beginning of the XX century (in 1900) and it was the strongest club before World War I not only in Rome, but also in the region. The team managed to reach Serie A only in 1929.
The next decade became a period of formation for ‘bianco-celesti’. Being at a strong mid-position in the table initially, the team managed to finish the second in 1937.
The 1940’s weren’t remarkable for the team, but since the resumption of the championship after the break caused by World War II, the team managed to set the stage for quite good achievements on the domestic arena. The team finished third twice, in 1956 and in 1957, and it won Italy Cup in a year.
For the rest, the team was destined to be the mid-position in the standings, and then in the next decade even relegated to Serie B, in which, as a matter of fact, it didn’t have to wander for a long time.
Dropping in the class couldn’t but cause drastic changes in the management as well as in the squad. These changes finally occurred and as the result the club won their first ever Scudetto in the 1973/74 season. But they didn’t manage to consolidate success and then a new trip to Serie B related to fixed matches emerged. Furthermore a number of team leaders were disqualified.
In the 80’s Lazio was nearly in Serie C1, but got off only in the transition games. The period of the prosperity for the Romans lasted from 1990 till the beginning of 2000’s, when appropriate conclusions were made and particular actions were taken after the disgrace which was hardly avoided in 1987 (the third strongest division in Italy was as close to them as never before).
The year of 1998 stood out to be especially fruitful: the Italian Cup & the Italian Super Cup, the UEFA Cup. In a year Lazio won the UEFA Super Cup and in two years received the honorary title of the champion of Italy, the second title in the history of the club after the year of 1974. In the first ten years of the 2000-s the club’s museum was enriched with two Italian Cups and one Super Cup.
