Legia Warszawa is a football club in Poland. It is based in Warsaw and was established in 1916. Initially it was based in Maniewicze area in Volhynia and during World War I it was the football club of the Polish Legions. In July 1916 the team moved to Warsaw. After the War Wojskowy Klub Sportowy Legia Warszawa, as it was named, was the football club of the Polish Army. From 1949 to 1957 Legia was known as Central Military Sports Club Warsaw. Having moved to Warsaw, Legia faced Polonia Warsaw in their first match, which was a 1-1 draw. Their first away game was a 2-0 win over KS Cracovia, the champion in Poland at that time. Legia made their debut in the Polish first league in May 1927. From the year of 1936 and till the end of World War II the team competed in the second division.
The club was crowned the league champion eight times; the last title came in 2006. Legia won 15 Polish Cup tournaments till the year of 2012. Their most impressive result at the European tournaments was the semifinal of the UEFA Champions League in 1970 and twice they reached the quarterfinal in 1971 and 1996. In 1991 Legia played in the semifinal of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and in 1965, 1982 they reached the quarterfinal.
Currently the club belongs to media holding ITI Group; they play their home matches at the Polish Army Stadium, which has a capacity of 31,000.
