Qatari football club Lekhwiya SC was founded in 1938. It was organized by the police officers and was initially called Al-Shorta Doha. Most recently, in 2009, the club got its current name Lekhwiya.
The team’s owner is the Heir Apparent Sheikh Abdullah al Thani and it goes without saying that Lekhwiya is the most financed club in Qatar. With the team’s reformation in 2009, they found themselves in the Qatari Second Division. Their first run into the top-flight Qatar Stars League came in the 2010/11 season which Lekhwiya pulled off as the league champions and contested the title once again in the following 2011/12 campaign. The team made it to the finals of the 2010 Sheikh Jassem Cup but eventually lost to Al-Arabi. Lekhwiya announced themselves on the continental arena in the AFC Champions League match against Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli on 7 March 2012.
The club can boast of their top goalscorers like Bakari Koné and Mohammed Razak. Lekhwiya’s current players Karim Boudiaf and Dame Traoré have made most appearances for the team during their stint.
Lekhwiya play their home matches at Thani bin Jassim Stadium which can hold up to 22,000 people.
