PFC Levski Sofia (Levski Sofia or Levski) is a football club in Bulgaria, named after Vasil Levski, who is Bulgarian national hero. 24 May 1914 is the official date, when the team was established, but actually students from the Second Male High School in Sofia formed the football team in 1911.
In 1921 the tournament, the Sofia Sports League, was formed. In 1924 the National Championship was given a start. Levski was the winner of that competition in 1933, 1937 and 1942. The team proved themselves one of the strongest teams in the country and after World War II since 1946 they won four consecutive champion titles. Then they won the championship in 1953 and then had a decade-long interval. In 1965, 1968 and 1970 they won the champion titles. In 1969 they merge with Spartak Sofia and were named Levski - Spartak. In the 1970s the team won three championship titles, twice they achieved the quarterfinals of the Cup Winners Cup and the quarterfinal of the UEFA Cup.
In 1985 their name was changed to Vitosha and after 1989 the influence of politics decreased, the team was named Levski and several newcomers joined the team. Se Levski’s several footballers were called to represent Bulgaria at the 1994 World Cup and helped the national squad to finish fourth. Since 1993 they won three consecutive league titles and then they had a five-year interval. In new millennium they won the 2001/02, 2005/06, 2006/07, 2008/09 championships.
In 2006/07 they reached the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, in 2005/06 they competed in the UEFA Europa League but were eliminated from the quarterfinal by Schalke 04. In 2009/10 and 2010/11 they reached the group stage of the Europa League.
