Two years later the club showed fantastic cup form, swooping to victory at Haugesund in the final.
The 2008/2009 season was marred by the club’s poor performance. Lillestrøm flirted with relegation and narrowly avoided it thanks to a sensational win over Rosenborg. The Canaries were hitting financial problems on a large scale in the following season. As a result, many key players left the club. Exciting young footballers from the academy were given chance to shine. Lillestrøm finished 11th and secured a place among the elite.
