History and achievements
FC Lokomotiv Moscow was founded on January 12, 1936. The main sponsor of the club is Russian Railways.
The first USSR football championship began in May 1936 with a match between Lokomotiv and Dinamo Leningrad. The team from the city upon Neva was stronger despite the fact Lokomotiv scored first. The ‘Railroaders’ were rather successful in the first championship – they finished fifth. The team managed to win their first trophy the same year in the USSR Cup final against Dinamo Tbilisi.
At that time the team star was Valentin Granatkin: not only did he have a tremendous playing career, but he also managed to become an efficient executive. According to an order by the then FIFA President, João Havelange, International youth football tournament in memory of the First FIFA Vice-President Valentin Granatkin (Valentin Granatkin Memorial) was established in 1981. The tournament gave the football world such players as Igor Kolyvanov, Andreas Moeller, Marcel Desailly, Oliver Bierhoff and Alexander Mostovoi.
In the late 50s Lokomotiv had the best squad in their history: Valentin Bubukin, Vladimir Maslachenko, Viktor Sokolov – all led by Boris Arkadiev. The team won the USSR Cup in 1957 in front of the packed Luzhniki which hosted 103 thousand supporters!
In the late Soviet times the team was not very successful – the competition was much tougher than nowadays. In the 80s Lokomotiv struggled in the relegation rounds. After the breakdown of the Soviet Union the team turned into a good medium level competitor of the new Russian championship. In the late 90s the ‘Railroaders’ amazed everyone after reaching the UEFA Cup Winners’s Cup semifinals in 1998 and 1999, the latter final being denied by Lazio due to the away goals rule.
Lokomotiv won their first championship in 2002 after a deciding match versus CSKA due to an only goal scored by the team captain, Dmitri Loskov. The same year saw the opening of the new arena named after the club. In a year Loko repeated the success and has not won anything of the kind ever since.
Currently, Lokomotiv is one of the Russian Premier League leaders, however, they rarely reach the medal zone, although participation in European competitions is quite frequent. The thing is the team is rather unstable: they can both play a tremendous match and follow it with a dull draw versus an outsider.
