FC Luzern is a football club from Switzerland that was created in 1901. The team started competing in the third division in 1903 and during the first half of the century the side mostly played in that tournament, receiving promotion to the second division only in 1944. Nine years later the club earned qualification to the top league for the first time in its history and stayed in the top tier for the best part of the next five decades. The only time the club clinched the Swiss championship honors was in 1989, the honors of the Swiss Cup were claimed in 1960 and 1992.
In 2003 the side endured financial troubles and was consequently relegated to the Challenge League. The team quickly bounced back and in 2012 finished as a runner up in the top flight, which is the best league result in 23 years.
Luzern is one of the most supported teams in Switzerland and in the season 2011/2012 was the most attended club in the league.
