Maccabi Haifa is one of the most popular Israeli football clubs. The team was organized in 1913 and during its early years was rotating between two top leagues. The first achievement of the club dates back to 1942 when the team progressed to the final of the national Cup, but was defeated there by Beitar Tel Aviv 12–1.
The 1980s saw the side gradually becoming one of the main title contenders in the top flight. Maccabi claimed the trophy in the season 1983/1984 surprising the fans with exciting offensive football. The team celebrated two more league victories in the seasons 1984/1985 and 1988/1989, but the major achievement of that time was the double clinched in 1991.
The 1990s came down in the team’s history as the time of the most successful record in the European tournaments. Maccabi progressed to the last 16 round of the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup in the season 1993/1994 and played in the quarter-final of the 1998/1999 Cup Winners’ Cup.
In the year 2000 Avraham Grant took charge of the team and consequently led them to two championship titles. Under his tenure Maccabi qualified to the UEFA Champions League and set the record of 48 undefeated matches in the national league. The nickname of the team is the Greens.
