History and achievements
Mamelodi Sundowns FC is a South African football club founded in 1970.
The club experienced run of bad luck and even was close to dissolution during the first decade of existence. However, the club’s fortune promised to take a turn for the better in 1984 when the National Soccer League was founded. It incorporated the top clubs of South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns got their golden chance to compete there. The team had a poor start in the top flight but in 1988 they claimed their first silverware as the NSL League Champions. They welcomed another two NSL trophies in 1990 and 1993.
In 1996, the Premier Soccer League replaced NSL and Mamelodi Sundowns became part of the league. They had a fruitful period since 1998 till 2000 finishing as the PSL champions in three consecutive seasons. The club got another two league honors in 2006 and 2007, amassing 8 league titles throughout their history in total (as of 2012). In 2001, Mamelodi Sundowns made their biggest continental breakthrough climbing up to the CAF Champions League final but eventually losing 1-4 on aggregate to Al-Ahly.
In 2014 the club won their sixth Premier League.
The team are often nicknamed the Brazilians as their blue and yellow uniform resembles much that of the Brazilian national team. They are also known as the Downs and the Bafana Bastyle. The club plays home matches at the 28,900 seater Lucas Moripe Stadium.
