NK Maribor is a Slovenian top-flight club founded in 1960 in the city of Maribor.
It’s a tidbit that Maribor is one of three Slovenian teams who competed in Yugoslav top league before Slovenian PrvaLiga inception in 1991. However, they haven’t met much progress during that period climbing up to the 1967/68 Yugoslav Cup semi-finals at the utmost.
Maribor announced about themselves in 1991 when Slovenia became an independent country and Slovenian PrvaLiga was established. They claimed their first silverware already in the 1991/92 season in the shape of Slovenian Cup. The club’s golden days came in the late 1990s when they recorded seven consecutive PrvaLiga titles since 1997 till 2003, the feat never accomplished by any Slovenian club before. In between 2004 and 2008, Maribor went into the shade but they returned to the footballing forefront in the 2008/09 season when they were crowned the Slovenian champions again and recorded their first Slovenian Supercup. The year 2012 brought them true glory as the team won the treble – the Slovenian PrvaLiga, Slovenian Cup and Slovenian Supercup. In fact, Maribor have established themselves as the most honored club to date with 10 PrvaLiga titles, 7 Slovenian Cups and 2 Slovenian Supercups. Moreover, they never dropped down from the Slovenian top flight since 1991. It’s a tidbit that Maribor is the only Slovenian side to reach the UEFA Champions League group stage.
Maribor players are often nicknamed the Purples or the Violets after their purple kits. They play their home matches at Ljudski vrt which can hold up to 13,000 people.
