History and achievements
Maritzburg United is a South African club founded in 1979 in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.
Maritzburg is a club of meager resources. It has never claimed the Premier Soccer League title or made a breakthrough on the continental level. Throughout its history, the team competed mainly in the second tier. Only at the beginning of the 2000s, Maritzburg United earned promotion to the top flight. However, they didn’t show impressive results in the PSL and finished in the lower part of the table from season to season.
The club is proud of their former player Fadlu Davids who set up a record as the team’s top goalscorer and was twice named the top scorer of the South African National First Division.
The club’s nickname is the Team of Choice. Maritzburg United play their home matches at Harry Gwala Stadium which can hold up to 12,000 people.
