History and achievements
Monaco or Association Sportive de Monaco Football Club is a football club in the Principality of Monaco. It was founded in 1924 and initially competed in amateur league of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. The team debuted in the professional football league in 1933. It was the second division, but Monaco failed to succeed and returned to amateur status. In 1948 the team joined Division 2 and in 1953 made their top division debut.
Under the management of Lucien Leduc in 1960 Monaco won the Coupe de France and in 1961 they became the French Championship winners. The team won both domestic cup and championship in 1963. Leduc left the team and the decade between mid-1960s and mid-1970s Monaco spent altering between the first and the second divisions. When Leduc returned to Monaco, he led them to the top flight and helped to win the 1978 league title. The following year he left the side.
Monaco won the championship in 1982, 1988, 1997 and 2000. In 1980, 1985 and 1991 they won Coupe de France.
In 2000s the club faced financial problems and because of the debt was relegated to Ligue 2. In 2004 Didier Deschamps who guided Monaco at that time, helped them to finish runner-up of the UEFA Champions League.
The club’s renaissance came with the arrival of a new owner, Russian tycoon Dmitry Rybolovlev. He brought in serious investment, invited Claudio Ranieri and after the season 2012/2013 the club got back to the top flight of French football.
Stade Louis II is the team’s home venue. It has a capacity of 18,500 spectators.
