History and achievements
Club de Fútbol Monterrey is a football club in Mexico, located in Monterrey, the state of Nuevo León. It was founded in 1945 by several businessmen. The team played their debut match on 19 August 1945 against San Sebastián de León and won it 1-0 but left the league after the bus accident in the San Juan de los Lagos, when many footballers died. In 1952 the club returned to the second division and four years later they won promotion to the top flight. They face relegation the following season and earned promotion to the first division in the 1959/60 season. The first two seasons in the 1960s they were close to relegation but then had four seasons in the top-five, nevertheless the second half of the decade they were a mediocrity.
The first league title Monterrey won in 1986, the second title was in 2003 when the team won the Clausura title. The following success came in 2009 when Monterrey won the Apertura and in 2010 they became the Apertura winners again.
Among their international achievements are CONCACAF Champions League titles in 2010/11 and 2011/12. In 2011 the team finished fifth the FIFA Club World Cup and in 2012 they were third.
The team’s home venue is Estadio Tecnológico in Monterrey, which has a capacity for 32,854 spectators.
