Montevideo Wanderers is a football club from Montevideo, Uruguay, that currently competes in the Primera División.
The team was founded by a group of students in 1902. It’s a tidbit that two students, the Sardeson brothers, visited their parents in England in the 1890s and were impressed by the English side Wolverhampton Wanderers who won the FA Cup in that time. That was one of the reasons the club got their current name. Moreover, the team were real wanderers as they didn’t have a home ground in the early stages.
Montevideo Wanderers made their Primera División debut in 1905 and made a fine start finishing third in the league table. Their first silverware was not long in coming as the team won the national championship in 1906. They repeated the feat in 1909 and 1931. However, all the three titles were obtained during the amateur era. During the professional era, the Wanderers have never threatened to hit those same heights again. They kept their consistency finishing in the third position 6 times in between 1934 and 1942. But after that the club went in the shade. In the 2000 season, they won the Segunda División and got promotion to the top flight, where they regularly compete till the date.
Montevideo Wanderers have white and blue stripped kits. They play their home matches at Estadio Viera which can hold up to 11,000 spectators.
