Clube Desportivo Nacional, also known as Nacional, is an experienced Primeira Liga club from Portugal. The club was founded in 1910, thus being one of the oldest in Portugal. Nacional is based on Madeira Island just like another Primeira Liga club – Maritimo. Despite the fact Nacional was more successful in the 2010/11 season, Maritimo is the most honored team on the island.
The team first made it to the Portuguese top league only in the middle of the 90s after numerous futile efforts throughout its earlier history. Over more than 80 years management of Nacional tried to create a competitive club, but it all resulted only in playing in the national second- and lower-tier leagues. Only after receiving new management and coaching staff did the club begin to perform more confidently in the Portuguese championship and eventually became a constant member of the Primeira Liga. So far the club has had its most successful season in 2003/04. Nacional made use of its potential to the utmost and finished fourth in the Portuguese top league behind the bronze winning Braga. The key players who made the success possible that season were Paulo Assunção, box-to-box midfielder, and Adriano who was a perfect striker with 19 goals in the season.
The club made it to the quarterfinal round of the Portuguese Cup more than once as well as played in the UEFA Cup qualification round. The team again finished 4th in the national championship (Braga was ahead once more) in the 2008/09 season. The best striker of the club in the 2008/09 season was Nenê with 20 goals.
