History and achievements
Long before AS Nancy was formed the city of Nancy hosted football club with the same name that participated in the second League but did not achieve much in 64 years of its history. In the season 1963/1964 the club endured financial troubles and was dissolved.
One year later Claude Cuny decided to revive the team and managed not only to gather the players but also to draw attention to the squad by sending more than 18,000 letters to the fans and authorities in Nancy. The city town council and football amateurs supported the newly formed club granting enough money for it to receive professional level and start competing in Division 2. Two years later Nancy was promoted to the League 1.
The early 1970s are remembered by the fans as the time when the star of Michel Platini was shining in the club. Platini helped the club to achieve the Coupe de France in 1978, and that is to this day the major trophy of the club. While playing at Nancy Platini was awarded as the French Player of the Year two times.
The team went through a gradual slump in the early 1980s and the following two decades Nancy was teetering between League 1 and League 2.
The last major trophy it gained was the Coupe de la Ligue as the club defeated Nice 2-1 in the ultimate match.
During the 2011/2012 season the team stayed in the mid-table and occupied the 11th position at the end of the campaign. In 2013 Nancy left the top division.
