Newcastle United Jets FC is one of four Australian top-tier professional clubs that were founded prior to the emergence of A-League. It was established at the very beginning of the XXI century by a Cypriot-Australian businessman Con Constantine, the member of the Newcastle Breakers club. The team was first named FC Newcastle KB United and successfully represented the Australian National Soccer League. The club got its contemporary name right before joining the A-League. The word “Jets” referred to the Royal Australian Air Force base in Williamtown, which is situated 20 kilometers north to the Australian city of Newcastle. The name was changed in order to prevent confusion with the English Premier League side FC Newcastle United.
Newcastle United Jets became the A-League champions in the 2007/2008 season, securing a narrow 1-0 win against FC Central Coast Mariners in the Final. In 2010 the club faced some financial difficulties and was sidelined from the Final series for the next two seasons finishing seventh in the table on both occasions.
The team plays its home fixtures at the Hunter Stadium with a capacity of 33,000 viewers. The home kit coloring is blue-red, the away kit – black-white.
