History and achievements
Newcastle United appeared in 1892 in Newcastle upon Tyne after two clubs from that city merged into one team. The club’s home ground since the first match and to the present days has been St James’ Park. Last year it was renamed to Sports Direct Arena. The traditional colors of the shirts are black and white. The crest of the team in its current versions was introduced in 1988 and it depicts the coat of arms of the city Newcastle, two sea horses that symbolize Tyneside’s links with the sea. The supporters of the club call themselves the Magpies, the Toon army or the Geordies and are considered one of the most loyal fans in England.
It did not take the club long to reach the highest level in the English football. In the 1900s Newcastle clinched the League title three times, at the same time reaching the FA Cups Finals five times, yet gaining the trophy only in 1910.
Although Newcastle went through a period of turmoil in the following decades the 1950s saw the team rising again and dominating in the FA Cup three times within five years. In 1969 the club triumphed in final of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
It was not until 1992 when Kevin Keegan was appointed the club’s manager that Newcasle started competing successfully against top English clubs in the Premier League, reaching the third place in 1994 and finishing second in 1996 and 1997.
The beginning of the 21st century was a turbulent period for the club as it was even relegated to the Football League Championship in 2009. The following season the Geordies were promoted back to the top flight of the English football. In the season 2011/2012 with such players as Yohan Cabaye, David Santon and Demba Ba in the squad Newcastle finished 5th, remaining unbeaten in 11 consecutive games at the start of the season.
