History and achievements
Novara Calcio is an Italian football club founded in 1908 in Novara. It was organized by a group of eight students aged between 15 and 16 years. The team played amateur football during their early years and in 1912 they made their debut in a professional league in a match against Torino.
After the Italian football league system was reorganized in 1929, Novara found themselves in the second division. Their first run into the top flight dates back to the 1936/37 season. Since 1948 till 1956 were the glorious years for the team. They spent eight consecutive seasons in Serie A recording their best 8th place finish in the 1951/52 season. It worth mentioning that legendary striker Silvio Piola had his spell at Novara in that period and he graced the club with impressive number of goals. It’s a tidbit that after his death in 1996 Novara’s home stadium was renamed in Piola’s honor.
In 1977, the team went into sharp decline rotating between the third and the fourth divisions for the next three decades. Only in the 2009/10 season, the club managed to recuperate their lost positions and fought back their ticket to Serie B after 33 years of abscence. They went on their rise winning promotion to Serie A in 2011. It’s a tidbit that the team sparked furor beating world giants Inter 3-1 on 20 September 2011. However, the victory seemed to be occasional as Novara didn’t prove their consistency winning only 7 out of 38 games of the campaign. That season they finished 19th in the table ad dropped down to Serie B where compete till the date.
The team play their home matches at Stadio Silvio Piola which can hold up to 17,875 spectators.
