Omilos Filathlon Irakleiou, or simply OFI, is a Greek football side based in Heraklion, on the island of Crete. The club was founded in 1925 by a group of local athletes. Its kit colours are black and white.
In 1968 the team debuted in the 1st division, later being relegated to the second division after the disappointing 1970/1971 season. But in the 1975/1976 season OFI was promoted to the 1st division, where the club enjoyed average success for the next several years.
In 1985 the club hired Eugène Gerards, the coach, who would lead the team to its major success. OFI finished second in the 1985/1986 season, reached the 3rd position the next year and the 4th place in the 1987/1988 season. In 1987 OFI lifted the Greek Cup final, after beating Iraklis on penalties. During the 1993/1994 UEFA Cup campaign OFI dumped out of the tournament such giants as Slavia Prague and Atlético Madrid, but lost to Boavista in the third round.
After Gerards’s retirement in 2000, the club’s performance worsened. OFI struggled to secure it place in the Superleague Greece, but was relegated to the second division in 2009. The club returned to the Superleague in 2011.
