History and achievements
Olympiacos is a Greek football club based in Piraeus. It was established on 10 March 1925. The club's home stadium is Karaiskakis Stadium with a seating capacity of 32,115 seats. Olympiacos and Panathinaikos are long-standing arch rivals.
Olympiacos is the most successful club in Greek football. The club lifted 39 league titles, 25 Greek Cups and won the Greek Super Cup 4 times. The side has never been relegated to a lower division. Olympiacos reached the quarterfinals of UEFA tournaments twice, in the 1998/1999 UEFA Champions League and the 1992/1993 European Cup Winners' Cup. From 1997 to 2003 Olympiacos experienced golden years, when the team won 7 consecutive league titles. During the 1998/1999 season the team also entitled the double and reached the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, thus celebrating the most successful campaign in the history of the club.
It is also the most popular Greek side with approximately 2.5 million fans in Greece only. On 8 February 1981 21 fans of Olympiacos died in the stands of the stadium after a 6-0 match between Olympiacos and AEK Athens. The incident is known as the Karaiskaki Stadium disaster. Many outstanding footballers played for Olympiacos, including Rivaldo, Christian Karembeu and Zlatko Zahovič.
