History and achievements
Orlando Pirates is a South African club founded in 1937 in the area of Johannesburg, South Africa.
The club was organized by the offsprings of migrant workers and was initially called the Orlando Boys Club. But impressed by the 1940 American film the Sea Hawk, the team renamed themselves into Orlando Pirates.
The club gradually got more and more success. The Happy People, as they are sometimes called, enjoyed a meteoric rise in the 1970s as they won four National Premier Soccer League titles, three MTN 8 honors, three consecutive Life Challenge Cups and some other trophies throughout the decade. The team announced themselves to African football when they became CAF Champions League winners in 1995 and won the African Super Cup the following year. For the day, Orlando Pirates remain the only South African team to have ever won this tournament.
The club stroke roots and competes in the Premier Soccer League since its inaugural 1996/97 season. Since that time they welcomed four PSL titles to their trophy cabinet, winning the most recent ones in 2011 and 2012.
Orlando Pirates are in constant rivalry with another Premier Soccer League club Kaizer Chiefs. The rivalry originates from the fact that Kaizer Chiefs were formed by a former Orlando Pirates player Kaizer Motaung.
Orlando Pirates hold their home matches at the 40,000 seater Orlando Stadium and play them in symbolic black and white kits.
