Panionios is a professional football side located in Nea Smyrni, Greece. The club was established in 1890. Panionios currently competes in the Superleague Greece.
Panionios played predominantly in the top league throughout its history, being relegated to the second division only twice. Panionios finished 2nd after AEK in 1971, which is its biggest league achievement up to date. Panionios also lifted the 1971 Balkan Cup and the Greek Cup in 1979 and 1998.
In 2006 the club hired the coach Ewald Lienen, who built the team that later finished 5th in the Superleague Greece and got a ticked to the UEFA Cup. In the summer of 2008 Panionios signed the Uruguayan stars Álvaro Recoba and Fabián Estoyanoff.
