History and achievements
Club Atlético Peñarol is a Uruguayan football club from Peñarol district in Montevideo founded in 1891. It was organized by the British railway workers as Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club. In 1914, CURCC Peñarol got its current name Club Atlético Peñarol.
In 1892, the football department was founded and in course of time Peñarol football team established itself as dominating side in Uruguayan and South American football. Peñarol became the first club to win the title in the inaugural 1900 season of the Uruguayan Primera División and repeated the feat in the following campaign. In 1903, the team surprised with a 12-0 win over Triunfo, setting up a record of the first team to score more than 10 goals in the Uruguayan championship.
In the 1960s Peñarol reached the pinnacle of their fame as they claimed three Copa Libertadores victories in 1960, 1961 and 1966; won two Intercontinental Cups in 1961 and 1966 and recorded the Supercup of Intercontinental Champions in 1969. Moreover, the team kept their consistency on the national level by collecting 7 domestic league titles during the decade. As of February 2013, Peñarol holds the record of the most honored Uruguayan club with 46 champion titles.
In the 1980s, the team impressed again on the international arena. They welcomed two Copa Libertadores wins and their third Intercontinental Cup to their trophy cabinet. The 1990s saw the club to win five Uruguayan championships in a row for the second time in their history. They first collected five consecutive titles in between 1958 and 1962.
Peñarol players wear black and yellow kits. They play their home matches at the largest Uruguayan stadium Estadio Centenario which can hold up to 65,235 people. However, the team train on their private 12,000-seater Estadio José Pedro Damiani.
