Pohang Steelers is a South Korean football side located in Pohang. The club currently performs in the K League Classic.
Pohang Steelers was born in 1973 under the name of the POSCO Football Club. In 1984 the team joined the K League Classic. Two years later Pohang Steelers secured its first league title. From 1985 to 1998 the club enjoyed a golden era. Pohang won 2 championships, 1 KFA Cup, 2 AFC Champions Leagues and 1 League Cup.
At the outset of the millennium the side’s form was erratic. In the year of 2000 Pohang flirted with relegation but managed to stay among the elite. Soon the club got back on track and in the 2007 campaign the team clinched the league title. In 2008 Pohang lifted another KFA Cup. The year of 2009 has been one of the most successful to date. The club secured the League Cup for the second time in its history. On top of that, Pohang progressed to the AFC Champions League Final. The side had no problems in the final, securing a 2-1 win over Al-Ittihad. That year also witnessed the team clutched bronze medals of the Club World Cup. In 2012 the Steelers won their third KFA Cup.
Pohang Steel Yard is the team’s residence. The stadium holds 25,000 spectators.
