Portuguesa is a soccer team from São Paulo, Brazil. It is famous for its academy that breeds a plethora of young talents every year. The side is nicknamed Barcelusa due to its Barcelona-like playing style.
On August 14, 1920 Associação Portuguesa de Desportos was founded following the fusion of five clubs: Portugal Marinhense, Lusíadas Futebol Club, Associação Cinco de Outubro, Esporte Club Lusitano and Associação Atlética Marquês de Pombal. In 1940 the original name was changed to the modern one. In 1956 Portuguesa relocated to the new stadium which was purchased from São Paulo FC.
In 2007 the team got promotion to the Série A with a third-place finish. But the return was not a long stay as the club fell into the Série B in the next campaign. With the unveiling of a new manager in 2012, Portuguesa started producing outstanding attacking football and eventually sealed automatic promotion with 4 games to spare.
In 2013 season Portuguesa survived in the top flight but later were found guilty of putting a suspended player on squad list and relegated to Serie B instead of reigning champions Fluminense, who finished in the last four.
Barcelusa won the Campeonato Paulista in 1935, 1936 and 1973.
