History and achievements
Preston North End is a professional football team from the city of Preston. The club was established as a cricket club in 1863, fourteen years later it adopted rugby union rules, though a year later participated in its first match held under the rules of association football.
The club was one the founding members of the English Football League in 1888 and clinched the champions title in the first season. The team went on to claim the FA Cup in the same term, thus becoming the first team to achieve “Double” in English football. The result is even more remarkable considering the fact that Preston remained undefeated in both competitions.
The last major trophy win was the FA Cup victory over Huddersfield Town F.C. in 1938.
The last run of the club in the top flight was in the season 1960/1961 when they faced relegation to the Second Division. Three years later the side played in the FA Cup where they lost to West Ham United.
In 1985 the club dropped to Fourth Division for the first time in its history.
The nicknames of the side are the Lilywhites, PNE, The Whites, Preston. The home stadium is Deepdale Preston that can sit up to 24,500.
