History and achievements
Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (or Club Universidad Nacional A.C.) is a football club located in Mexico City. Roberto Mendez, who guided the team from 1946 to 1964, compared the players to pumas and after that the team’s been nicknamed Pumas.
In the 1954 the club became a member of the Segunda División. UNAM played its first game in the professional league on 12 September 1954 that was a match against C.F. Monterrey. Having spent eight years in the Segunda División, with a year interval for rebuilding, in 1962 UNAM earned promotion to the Primera División. When the team joined the top flight the management of the team decided to establish the youth academy to develop young footballers.
In the1974/75 the team was the Copa México and Campeón de Campeones winner. Their first league title came in 1976/77. The 1980s were a prolific decade for the team as in 1980/81 they won the top division title, in 1980, 1982 and 1989 UNAM were CONCACAF Champions’ Cup winners. They also won the Copa Interamericana in 1981. Pumas’ former head coach Velibor Milutinović was managing the Mexico national team before the 1986 FIFA World Cup, where he called many players from UNAM.
In the 1990/91 season Pumas won Mexican Primera División title and the following league victories came in 2004, when the team won Clausura and Apertura 2004. In 2005 Pumas reached the final of the Copa Sudamericana, where they faced Boca Juniors but lost on a penalty shootout.
By the year of 2006 they were close to relegation but under the management of Tuca Ferretti their results improved and in 2007 Pumas reached the final of the league tournament, where they lost to Atlante. UNAM were the winners of two Clausura titles in 2009 and 2011.
Their home stadium is the Estadio Olímpico Universitario which has a capacity of 62,700.
