FC Pyunik is an Armenian football club from Yerevan founded in 1992.
The club got off to a flying start claiming their first Armenian Premier League title in the inaugural 1992 season. Later on, they won two more titles, the Armenian Cup in 1996 and Armenian Super Cup in 1998. However, in 1999 Pyunik went into decline due to economic hardships and was eventually disbanded. The 2000s saw the club’s revival. In 2001, they began to recuperate their lost positions and won 10 consecutive titles. In 2011, their unbeaten run was stopped by Ulisses FC. Moreover, the team welcomed 4 Armenian Cups and 7 Armenian Super Cups to their trophy cabinet throughout the decade. So currently, Pyunik has established itself as a heavyweight on the Armenian football arena. Internationally, the club took part in several UEFA competitions, namely in the Champions League and Europa League.
The team derive their name after a mysterious bird Phoenix, which is known as Pyunik in the Armenian language. Pyunik play their home matches at Republican Stadium in Yerevan, which can host up to 15,000 spectators.
