Quilmes Atlético Club is a soccer club from the Quilmes district of Greater Buenos Aires. Now it competes in the Primera División. The side is nicknamed El Cervecero due to its sponsor, the Cerveza Quilmes brewery.
Quilmes was born on November 27, 1887. The club was formed by British immigrants and consequently white and blue became the club`s colours with reference to the England national football team. Quilmes wasn`t to be starved of title success for too long and the club duly clinched the Primera División in 1912.
El Cervecero participated in the Primera B Metropolitana until 1949 when the club gained promotion to the Primera División. The following season saw the team net the most goals in the league (118). However, in 1951 the club dropped down a division again. In 1970 El Cervecero secured the Primera B title. Quilmes got back on track and there was even better to come. In 1978 the club claimed its first Primera División triumph and qualified for the Copa Libertadores.
During the next three decades Quilmes performed predominantly in the Primera B Nacional, sometimes being promoted to the elite division. In 2012 the club won promotion to the top tier in second place.
