History and achievements
Racing Club is an Argentinean football club from Avellaneda. The club currently competes in the Primera División.
Racing Club de Avellaneda was created by a group of students on May 12, 1901. During the amateur era Racing was second to none as the club produced outstanding and consistent football. The team secured seven successive titles, starting from 1913. Now Racing holds the record number of amateur league titles.
In 1951 the side from Avellaneda became the first Argentinean club to seal 3 Primera División titles in a row. That period was the team`s most successful as Racing was almost invincible. After winning in the 1966 national championship Racing qualified for the Copa Libertadores. The following year saw the team lift that cup, after outclassing Uruguayan side Nacional in the final. Racing clinched the Intercontinental Cup the same year.
The 1970s were the period of stability in the top flight. But the bubble burst in 1983 with the club being relegated to the Primera B. In 1985 Racing came back to the Primera División. Three years later the team claimed international honours as they lifted another Copa Libertadores.
In 1998 Racing was struck by an incredible crisis and went bankrupt. It came as a welcome surprise when the team managed to clinch the 2001 Apertura with Reinaldo Merlo at the helm.
In 2010 Racing progressed to the Copa Argentina final but was defeated by Boca Juniors.
