Fotbal Club Rapid București is a football club in Romania. It was established by the railroad workers in 1923. Initially the team, which included amateur teams CFR and Excelsior, was named Cultural and Sporting Association CFR. In 1931 the team made its first league debut and before World War II the team was one of the strongest in Romania but hadn’t won a league title for a long time.
Between 1937 and 1945 they were named F.C. Rapid București, between 1945 and 1950 they were C.F.R. București, then for eight years the team’s name was Locomotiva București and after that they got their current name of F.C. Rapid București.
The first league title came in 1967. In the 1970s and 1980s the team had mixed success: they won the Romanian Cup in 1975, in 1973 they reached the quarterfinal of UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Then they had six years in the lower division, then advanced and relegated back several times.
In the late 1990s and 2000s Rapid București made certain progress: they won the Romanian cup in 1997/98, 2001/02, 2005/06, 2006/07 and in 1998/99, 2002/03 they were Liga I winners. In 2005/06 they reached the quarterfinal of the UEFA Cup.
