Real Betis Football Club appeared in 1907. Its name derives from the Roman name of the river Guadalquivir that flows nearby. The majority of the team’s fans of those times came from the lower social groups.
Real Betis became the first team from Andalucia to qualify for the Champions League. On the group stage facing such rivals as Chelsea, Liverpool and Anderlecht they came third to reach the UEFA Cup quarterfinals.
Former president of the club Rafael Gordillo (also a former player for the club) enjoyed full credit given by the fans of the green-and-white. The times under his spell were the most successful in the club’s history. Although Real Betis didn’t attain anything overwhelming there were no downfalls accompanied either by massive dismissals or by inadequate decisions taken by previous presidents of the club.
When Manuel Ruiz de Lopera took over his beloved the club many fans got concerned as it was not only the team that Lopera loved but his own profit as well. The fans couldn’t believe it when they heard that Lopera decided to sell the club’s shares to Luis Oliver who used to run Jerez and Cartagena leaving them in wretched condition.
