Real Sociedad was established in 1909 and came to be one of the clubs that participated in the first Primera championship of 1928.
Throughout their history they played in the Champions League three times. In 1981 they dropped out of the tournament in the very first round. The following year Real Sociedad reached semi-finals where they lost to Hamburg SV. Their last participation in the Champions League of 2003/2004 was successful enough as they managed to pass through the group stage to be knocked out by Olympique Lyon. In 2007 the club abandoned the Primera being 19th in the table. 3 year after they came back to the elite as Segunda champions.
Presently the team enjoys its position in the middle of the table.
Throughout their history Real Sociedad won the Primera twice in 1981 and 1982 and the Segunda three times in 1949, 1967 and 2010. Also they were runners-up in the championship in 1980, 1988 and 2003. They reached the final of the Copa del Rey 5 times and won three of them. In 1982 Real Sociedad triumphed in Supercopa de España.
Many notable players used to play for the club: Ignacio Eizaguirre, Luis Arconada, John Oldridge, Valeri Karpin, Luis Garcia Postigo, Darko Kovacevic, Edgaras Jankauskas, Dmitry Khokhlov, Xabi Alonso, Nihat Kahveci, Sabio, Mark Gonzalez.
The most famous managers who ever worked with the squad were Lippo Hertzka, Javier Irureta, Javier Clemente and Raynald Denoueix.
